AUSPICIOUS SIGNIFICANCE OF KARTIKA POORNIMA

Kartika Poornima is considered to be auspicious by many Hindus based on one of the following legends:

  • In the Vaishnava tradition, this is considered the day that Radha and Krishna performed rasalila with the gopis

  • Shiva, in the form of Tripurantaka (Killer of the 3 demons Tripurasura) killed Tripurasura

  • Considered the manifestation date of Matsya, the first of the Vishnu's dashavatara

  • Celebrated as the birthday of Kartikeya

SIGNIFICANCE OF KARTHIKA DEEPAM

Karthika Deepam is a festival of lights that is observed in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Sri Lanka.

Rows of agal vilakkus (clay oil lamps) are lit in the houses of adherents in celebration of this festival, to ward off evil and usher in prosperity and joy. Additionally, this festival celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters (similar to Raksha Bandhan). On the occasion of Kartikai Pournami (full moon of the Kārtikai month) oil lamps with 365 wicks, prepared at home, are lit in Shiva temples. Similarly, we will light wicks at the temple to celebrate the occasion.
