Hindu New Year is widely celebrated by Hindus on either the first of the day (pratipada) of the bright lunar fortnight (shukla paksha) of the lunar month of Chaitra, or the solar new year known as Mesha Sankranti (solar transit of Mesha) which loosely aligns with mid-April.
Rama Navami (the 9th day / navami of shukla paksha during Chaitra) is in celebration of the birth of Lord Rama. In South India, the wedding of Rama and Sita is also commemorated on this day (as opposed to Vivah Panchami which occurs 4 months earlier, also in commemoration of their wedding) as Sita Rama Kalyanotsavam.
